Dear Sisters,

If you accepted lap blankets at our Stake Relief Society Leadership meeting, thank you very much for being willing to add extra service to your busy lives! It is getting cold fast, and I am writing to remind you of our deadline for getting the completed lap blankets back, so that we can deliver them to the hospice. We would like to have all blankets returned by November 21st to the stake center. There is a worldwide training meeting tomorrow, Saturday, November 13th, so I will have a plastic bin set up in the Relief Society room for anyone who has already finished and would like to turn their blankets in at that time. If you need to make other arrangements to turn them in, please email me and we can work something out. If you did not take blankets at our Stake Leadership Meeting, please disregard this message.

Annual Meetinghouse Clean-Up Day

Annual Meetinghouse Clean-Up Day
Brother and Sisters,

As many of you know, Saturday (November 6) is the stake center clean up day. We will start at 8am and work until our area is finished. We will have the blue section on the attached document. We have both inside and outside responsibilities. Please bring rakes, tarps, gloves, brooms. etc. for leaf removal and parking lot clean up. It also might be good to bring general cleaning supplies (sponges, scrubber, etc) because I don't know what will be available at the building.

We invite all to participate. This is a great chance to show the Lord our gratitude for such a nice building to worship and have activities in. It is also a great opportunity to work side by side with our ward family. We love you all and hope to see you on Saturday. Remember, many hand make lighter work.

Thank you for your service,

Mike Blasko

If you feel like you might have clothing to donate, here is more detail from Sister Flores:

I will be collecting clothes for both BOYS and GIRLS, ages 0 to 7. It will be a summertime in January, so summer clothes would work best. Shoes may be too heavy and take up too much space, but we will do our best to fit in what we can.

The place of collection will be by the kitchen at Church in a big box labeled "FOR CHILDREN IN PERU".

See you Wednesday!

Candlelight Vigil

Dear Sisters,
There will be a candlelight vigil at 6pm this Tuesday.

This is the first time our county has had a domestic violence awareness candlelight vigil; part of the reason why they are having one now is because of Shane Wynn's death. Either Greg Isaac (the father of Shane's two oldest children) or I (Sarah Ann Cox) will be speaking for about two minutes at some point during the vigil. The Domestic Violence Center is connected to the Grassroots Women's shelter, which (for those of you who used to be in Savage Mill, like me) we used to make sack lunches for now and again.

Here are the details:

DVC Candlelight Vigil 2010
Tuesday, October 26th
6:00-7:00 p.m.
Howard County Library's East Columbia Branch
6600 Cradlerock Way, 21045

Sponsored by the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County

To bring awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence in Howard County and to hear from survivors as well as their families, friends and advocates who support them.

Playgroup

It looks like rain again on Thursday and Friday! What luck! However, the chance of rain on Friday is lower so we can try to meet at Rockburn Park at 10 am. If it's soaking outside/still raining on Friday morning let's plan to go to the Columbia Mall's play place instead at 10 am (right in front of JCPenny's). There's no school on Friday and the Columbia mall's play space has an age limit to it (not sure what it is!). If anyone knows of a place that's better suited for older kids, let me know! Otherwise, we'll pray for good weather and use Columbia Mall as a back-up.
See you Friday at 10!

All Women are welcome to attend! If you have questions contact Melissa Riley.

Knitting Skills

Sisters;

We have a 99 years old sister, Beinin Mary Louise, who would love to do a little bit of knitting. Her home teacher has approached RS and asked us, if there would be any sister, who has knitting skills and would love to visit with sister Beinin to get her started.

FYI, sister Beinin has two skeins of yarn, knitting needles and a pattern book with her in her room and that she has selected the pattern for knitting a 1 square meter blanket with which to keep her feet warm. Further, Mary has done much knitting in her earlier years and was quite a good seamstress in her day. She wishes to do this as she is bored in the nursing home and wishes to be productive.

If you think, it's a type of service you might greatly benefit, please, contact sister Campora who can give you her address and more information.

Thanks!

Beans by Sister Douglass

Here are some notes and recipes for using beans from our last Relief Society meeting:

Cooking Beans (any kind)
• Sort and wash beans--no more than about 1 pound of beans for a large pot
• Put beans in a large pot and add 3-4 cups of water per cup of beans
• Bring to a boil and boil lightly for 2 - 2 1/2 hours, adding more water as needed
• When beans are soft, add salt to taste

Basic Refried Beans
• Fry chopped onion in oil to give the beans a nice flavor
• Add beans by spooning out of cooking pot with a slotted spoon

Paid Part-Time Job Available

Sister Mary Greenwood, RS President in Columbia 1st ward, has forward this onto us.

All, Lauren Capra, a delightful 80-year old woman from NJ, contacted the Church looking for someone who might help her adult daughter, Cathleen, 3 days a week for 2 hours a day, as she is recuperating from a car accident that has left her using a walker for a time. Neither woman is a member of the Church, but Lauren had a good feeling about Church members and called the mission home looking for a way to locate potential helpers. Cathleen Capra teaches college students M, T and W and needs help coming up the stairs to her 2nd floor apartment when she arrives home at 3:00 and would like some light housekeeping help on those days, with the possibility of also helping her get in and out of the pool and gym on her apartment premises. She does drive so does not need any help in that arena.

She is offering to pay for this help, and will need it for approximately 3 weeks, starting next week.

Summary – helper needed M, T, and W from 3-5 for three weeks. Paid position. Location is 5679 Columbia Road (apartments off of 175 and Columbia Road, near mall). Would be a great position for a college-age student or someone looking for some extra money.

If you are interested, please call Lauren or Catherine at 410-740-4278.

Swim lessons?

Interested in swim lessons for your kids this summer? My sister is coming to spend a few months here before she goes to BYU. She's looking to earn a little money and is fully qualified to teach swim lessons. She's been a life guard as well as swim instructor for a few years at the community center where she has worked. I don't know what her fees are but I'm sure it would be a lot less then what is typically charged. Email me if you are interested and I'll put you in touch with her. Her name is Kimberly and she arrives June 8th.

Thanks!

Donations for Stake Spring Service Project

For the Stake Relief Society Day of Service of April 17, our sewing project is to make pillowcases, laundry and toiletry bags for the Grassroots Crisis Center.

To be successful we need donations from each ward of:
  • fabric and cord
  • the use of 3 sewing machines
  • the use of 2 rotary cutters and mats
  • the use of 1 iron and ironing board
If you are doing spring cleaning, this would be a wonderful use for your unused fabric. If you can bring fabric that day or loan an item, please letus know on the sign-up sheets on Sunday, or email Cheri Meiners directly with an estimate of what you are bringing. (We can use all types of fabrics---heavier fabrics will be used for bags; cottons can be used for the pillowcases. 1 yard of 45" fabric will make one pillowcase, or one laundry bag.)

Monday, March 29, 2010
