Babysitting Help Needed

A sister in our Relief Society is in need of babysitting help from December 19 through 23rd (next week) for medical reasons. She will need to drop off her children at 8:30 am and would pick them up at 3:30pm. Monday thru Friday. If you can help during these hours, on any day of the week, please contact the RS President Olga Campora.

BROWNIES REQUEST

Our Relief Society is in a need of one volunteer, awesome sister who would be willing to make brownies for this coming Wednesday. Our RS is supposed to deliver a dinner to the sisters missionaries who serve at the Washington DC visitor center this Wed by noon. We have all covered but the brownies. TO ALL YOU BUDDING CHEFS...OR NOT...

For November, the season of Thanksgiving, I thought it would be fun to
do a Mormon Helping Hands type service project together.

The Grassroots shelter has 55 residents right now. They rely on the
community to donate meals. We will be assembling dinner for them and
bringing it over.

This is how it works...I challenge each of you to find a way in the
next week to earn $5. Bring that money our house to put towards the
food. I will have purchased everything at Costco ahead of time. You
will be putting together the dinners and then taking a few vans over
to deliver the food by 3:15.

Any extra money we have, we will buy a Giant gift card to give to a
resident (and her children) who live at the shelter and are in the
Columbia 1st ward.

The Blaskos are donating cookies so that will give us some extra money
there!!! Thank you, BLASKOS!

As usual, please spread the word to all the youth in your ward.
Everyone is invited! I think it will be a fun way to kick off the
holiday season, by both hanging with and helping with your friends in
the Stake.

Stake Day of Service Details

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Columbia Maryland Stake, this year the church is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Church welfare program. This inspired program was started to meet the needs of those who lost employment, farms, and even homes in the wake of what became known as the Great Depression. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Church welfare program, members worldwide have been invited to participate in a day of service. With the assistance of the High Council and Stake Relief Society Presidency we have prayerfully considered how the Columbia Stake could render meaningful service to our brothers and sisters in our communities and neighborhoods.

On Saturday the 29th of October 2011 we have arranged four separate service opportunities; the purpose of this email is to describe each of these opportunities to you. After you understand the details of the four service opportunities we would ask you as individuals and families to select the opportunity that best suits your personal situation. If you are not able to participate in one of these opportunities we encourage you to seek opportunities of your own.

Information about our planned service opportunities will be distributed through ward and branch Relief Society and Priesthood “Information Chains” All families and individuals desiring to participate in any of these activities are asked to show up at the time and place indicated.

We invite you to extend an invitation to your friends and neighbors to join in on this meaningful service if you feel so inspired.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY #1. Therapeutic Recreational Riding Center

Saturday 29 Oct, 8:00AM to 12:00 Noon

BENEFICIARY: The first opportunity for service is to contribute some sweat and hard work to improve the Therapeutic and Recreational Riding Center (TRRC). The TRRC’s mission is to provide both physical and occupational therapy on horseback, treating a range of physical, mental and emotional disabilities, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, post-traumatic brain injury, autism, ADHD, and cognitive disorders. It also provides recreational riding opportunity for clients with and without disabilities.

3 PROJECTS:

Depending on the job(s) you decide to tackle we would ask that you bring the following…..
1. For Painting fences, please bring your own paint brushes, paint rollers, paint trays. Paint will be provided by the TRCC

2. To clear brush from their meditation pond, we will need - gas powered weed eaters, electric or gas powered hedge trimmers, extension cords, gloves, shovels, rakes, lopping shears

3. The Pond liner task (to adjust the rubber liner in the pond) will require a few strong backs

TOOLS: If you don’t have any of the above tools or equipment there will be other opportunities for service at the TRRC.

DRESS: Dress appropriately for the service of your choice.

WHO CAN HELP: The TRRC can accommodate a large group, 200+ will not be a problem. This activity is appropriate for children, we would remind you however, that you are responsible for the safety and management of all those you bring. The TRRC has a picnic area and a small playground; families are welcome to use both after the completion of our service effort.

WEATHER DEPENDENT: In case of bad weather this event will be cancelled.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY #2. Columbia, MD Stake Center

Saturday 29 Oct, 9:00AM to 12:00 NOON

BENEFICIARY: Grassroots is an emergency and transitional shelter with 50 beds, and a 24-hour phone and walk-in crisis center located in Columbia, MD

PROJECT: At the Stake Center we will be sewing pillow cases for the residents, and drawstring bags to be used for toiletries.

ACTIVITIES and WHAT TO BRING: bring fabric (1 yard needed for each pillow case. Neutral, cotton fabrics preferred.) Ribbon also needed for bags. If you are unable to provide these items, you are STILL welcome to attend this project.

1. Cutting fabric: bring scissors

2. Ironing: Please contact Jill Johnson (contact info below) if you can bring an iron and ironing board.

3. Sewing: We will need 2 sewing machines per ward. Please check with your ward Relief Society leadership to see if these are still needed, or contact Jill Johnson directly (contact info below) .

4. Making cards for the residents. Each completed item will be given with a handmade card. Materials will be provided.

5. Bagging the handmade card and item. Materials provided.

5. Delivery: A few families are needed to deliver the finished items to Grassroots.

WHO CAN HELP: We can accommodate about 75-100 people among the various stations. Children are welcome and can make cards, but will need supervision by the parents. Adults without sewing experience can cut and iron, attach labels, bag the items, or help deliver the items to Grassroots.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY #3 “Partners in Care”

29 October, time/place and description of service is a work in progress

BENEFICIARY: Partners in Care is an initiative of the Maryland National Guard Joint Force Headquarters Chaplain’s office. The purpose of Partners in Care is to provide support to the families of Maryland National Guard personnel who are deployed.

PROJECT: Chaplain William Sean Lee, Colonel, Maryland National Guard, is in charge of coordinating support to the families of Maryland’s deployed servicemen and women. When a family of a deployed person requires assistance (the service rendered varies for each situation) the Colonel is made aware of these needs and takes steps to match the need to a volunteer service organization. President Tucker has volunteered the support of the Columbia Stake to respond when Colonel Lee is seeking assistance for service member families that reside within the boundaries of the Columbia Stake.

Because each situation is different the exact description of what service needs to be rendered may not be known until a few days before our Day of Service. For 29 October, if Colonel Lee identifies a family or families in need of assistance, he will contact President Tucker the week prior with the details and scale of the project(s). President Tucker will coordinate the Columbia Stake’s response.

WHO CAN HELP: Any individual or family who is willing to assist. For the service activity on 29 October we request the names of families/individuals who would be willing to assist on that day. Additionally, because the need for service to the families of deployed personnel is not a “one time event” the Colonel will reach out to the Columbia Stake, via President Tucker, whenever service is needed. For that reason we are interested in knowing the names of families and/or individuals interested in volunteering for future service opportunities.

Detailed information describing what specific service will be rendered on 29 Oct in support of "Partners in Care" will be provided when known. Please contact President Tucker directly for the most up to date information on this service opportunity. SERVICE OPPORTUNITY #4 Baltimore Re-hab extended care center (BRECC).

Saturday 29 Oct, 1:30-3:00 pm 3900 Loch Raven Boulevard Baltimore, Maryland

BENEFICIARY: The Baltimore VA Rehabilitation & Extended Care Center specializes in providing rehabilitation and post-acute care for patients in the VA Maryland Health Care System.

PROJECT: Visit and assist the Veterans by providing a 90 minute program which could include a BBQ, Games, Conversation, Instruction on compiling a personal history or Family history research or other activities suggested by the recreational and service staff.

WHO CAN HELP: We are requesting the Stake Single Adults and Young Single Adults lead organize and staff this service opportunity. Due to the size of the facility and the fact that many of the Veterans are in wheelchairs, the BRECC can accommodate only 20-30 volunteers. The Single Adults and Young Single Adults in the Stake desiring to participate are asked to contact the Stake Single Adult or the Young Single Adult leaders . The Young Single Adults will provide detailed information on their Facebook page, which is named "Columbia Maryland Stake YSA". Toddler bed giveaway

If anyone is interested, I have a toddler bed to give away. It is cherry wood in color. There are some places where the paint has rubbed due to being moved a few times. I have the manual on how to put it together etc. I didn't use it with my last child so I probably wont use it with my next so if anyone would like it they can let me know and come get it. I'm trying to get everything cleaned up and moved before baby gets here.
