Scarves for Soldiers

One of our service projects for our March 10th Relief Society Meeting is knitting and crocheting scarves for soldiers. For those of you who are interested in starting one in advance, instructions are in this post. Ask Camille Lund if you have questions.

A few tips:

  • I have been able to find a 100% wool yarn (Lion Brand Yarn, Fishermens's Wool) at JoAnn's and Michael's.
  • An 8 oz. skein of yarn will make one scarf and costs about $9.00 (or you can use a 50% off coupon and get it for $4.50)
  • For crocheting I used a size H crochet hook and did the whole scarf in single crochets.
  • For knitting I am using size 10 needles.

Materials:

  • Any soft, worsted or bulky weight (100 grams/3.5 ounces) wool yarn (lamb’s wool, alpaca, cashmere or combinations of these are acceptable).
  • Colors: ONLY black, charcoal, brown, tan, or combinations of these colors.
  • Only 100% soft wool yarn will be accepted, because our Armed Forces are not allowed to wear synthetic fibers outside the wire.

Finished dimensions: approx. 12 in. x 42 in. No fringe, scallops, or holes big enough to put your little finger through, just plain, as these need to be “unisex”.

Note: Any stitch EXCEPT stockinette stitch if knitting as it curls, so please do not use it.

Cast off. Weave in ends.

It's a Boy!

Andrew Patrick Martin
was born to Nicole and Alan Martin
on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

He was 8 lb. 5 oz. and 21 inches long.

They are all home and healthy. Congratulations to their family!!!

FamilySearch Indexing

Volunteers needed. Work from your own home. Members and non-members are invited to participate in FamilySearch indexing:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/indexing/frameset_indexing.asp

Using the FamilySearch online indexing system, volunteers from around the world are able to quickly and easily transcribe the records—all from the convenience of their homes. The indexes are then posted for free at familysearch.org. Millions of rolls of microfilm provide census, vital, probate, and church records from over 100 countries for indexing projects. Governments, churches, societies, and commercial companies are also working to make more records available.

You can help by volunteering to index one of the current U.S. census projects or the upcoming England and Wales census projects.
